Final Capstone Project
Introduction to the California Driver's Handbook Traffic Controls
This capstone project is a series of modules that serve as a prototype eLearning product to introduce the California traffic controls in Spanish in preparation for the California driver’s license exam. The low passing grades by applicants indicate that the current Spanish training materials available (printed and online manuals offered by the California DMV) are not meeting their goals. This proposal seeks to address the performance gap with eLearning products that incorporate interactive media and audiovisuals.
Since 2013, documented and undocumented Spanish speakers in California are able to obtain a driver’s license. It is paramount that more effective instructional options are made available for this demographic so they can drive a vehicle, and be able to carry identification.
The learning theories applied in this course are Cognitivism and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning. This is achieved through the use of text, narration, images, video and interactive features with exercises and practice quizzes. The process involved using eLearning software, video and audio editing, image editing, extensive research and conducting evaluations.
The final evaluation was a usability test completed by Spanish speakers of various backgrounds. 90% of participants gave high rankings when evaluating relevancy of images, narrative, adequacy and professionalism of the Spanish content, audiovisuals, and design.
It is the author’s intent that this prototype serve as a sample for possible future instructional models whether they be created by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles or by private organizations.
